Denim Feathers and More

I’ve been MIA for a bit, sorry about that but I’ve been busy making apparel for myself. After losing 45 pounds from April to August, I spent some time making a couple of blouses for myself, and then my mojo left me. 😕 I started cleaning up my studio, organizing it and started a bucket bag but the grommets and took kit I bought to complete it, did not work out like I wanted to, so the bag currently waits to be finished.

Along comes this idea popping back into my mind! I have A LOT of used denim, donated to me by my late son-in-law. I’ve made a few things out of it, bags and what not. But I’ve always wanted to try making denim feathers so while the bucket bag sits on the shelf to wait, I tried my hand at making denim feathers!

I started with strips of denim, 1.5″ x 6″ roughly. I used a small zigzag stitch to apply the yarn. Before you start pulling the threads shape your feather. Just make sure that the white threads are the ones you intend to pull before cutting your denim otherwise it will be a bit tougher. White threads = Blue feathers, Blue threads = White feathers. The blue threads are woven tightly so it will take a bit more time and patience to remove them. (This is what I hear, I haven’t tried a white feather)

It took me about 15 to 20 min from start to finish, but this is my first one. I think I can get it down to 5 min per feather if I do it in a manufacturing process, cut, sew, trim, pull multiples at a time rather than one feather at a time.

I’m going to try my hand at white feathers! Why not!? 😁 Its’ a lazy Sunday with nothing else better to do.
